You write faster and get fewer replies

Your team generates subject lines and bodies with AI in minutes. Volume goes up, cost goes down and replies fall. When that happens, the usual reaction is to rewrite the text. It is almost never the text.

The drop in deliverability caused by AI has three real causes: warm-up practices that dirty your domain, volume spikes that providers read as risk and engagement that falls with nobody watching it. Here is how to spot them and what to do on Monday.

AI content is not the problem

A controlled experiment with 450 participants received emails generated with AI from different domains. All of them reached the main inbox, with no differences by provider. The authors attribute it to the precautions applied: plain text, clear subject lines and no suspicious elements (Analyzing The Impact of Ai-Generated Email Marketing Content on Email Deliverability in Spam Folder Placement).

Content generated with AI can be deliverable. What breaks deliverability is what you do with it.

Validity put the global average inbox placement rate at 87.2% in 2025, up 3.7% on the previous year (2026 Email Deliverability Benchmark Report). In its previous edition, one in six legitimate marketing emails did not reach the inbox and the global spam rate almost doubled between the first and fourth quarter of 2024, from 4.5% to 8.6% (Benchmark Report).

That report adds two warnings. Providers already deploy language models trained on phishing, malware and spam inside their filters. And AI-generated summaries do not always reflect the content well, which reduces engagement and drives complaints up.

Three mistakes that really sink your domain

  1. Warming up the domain with tricks. There are tools that send filler content and simulate opens and clicks to build reputation before sending for real. Most deliverability experts consider it one of the worst ways to start, and it can end in an IP or domain block (International Email Benchmark).
  2. Raising volume suddenly. Providers watch inconsistent sends or sends that grow suddenly. In 2025 average volume fell between March and April and stayed low through the northern hemisphere summer, just as Yahoo and Microsoft started enforcing new requirements (2026 Email Deliverability Benchmark Report).
  3. Automating without watching engagement. If the recipient does not engage, the signal the provider receives is that the message could have been better. An unsubscribe or a spam complaint confirms that you did not meet the expectation (International Email Benchmark).

Checklist for Monday

Before touching a line of text, review these five signals. Each one points to a different cause.

Signal What to check Action
Replies fall suddenly Volume and reputation over the last 30 days Freeze sending and review bounces and complaints. 65% of the professionals surveyed have been through that sudden drop (Folderly)
Email lands in spam or in promotions SPF, DKIM and DMARC DMARC adoption fell from 59% to 48% of the domains analysed in 2026 (2026 email deliverability report)
Fewer opens than before Subject line and sender Emails with AI recorded a 37.37% open rate versus 41.05% for those created from scratch (GetResponse)
More clicks per open Segmentation and relevance The same analysis gives 25.25% clicks per open with AI versus 20.62% without it (GetResponse)
Nobody knows who is watching this Owner and dashboard 95% of respondents say inbox placement matters for selling, and those who solve it assign budget (Folderly)

The pattern repeats. 70% of sales teams already use AI to write outbound emails and 82% of respondents believe the recipient notices. 79% have heard from a prospect who never received their email. Among those who say email is getting harder for them, 75% use AI to write it (Folderly).

What this approach does not fix

No checklist gives reputation back in a day. Folderly documents recoveries in 6 to 8 weeks, with cases going from 37% of email in silent spam to 97% or 99% inbox delivery. These are their data, not a promise.

Nor should you compare your dashboard with a headline. Validity measures 87.2% global inbox placement in 2025 and Unspam measures 63% in 2026. The dashboards and the methods are not the same, so the figure only works as a trend reference (2026 email deliverability report).

And there is an underlying limit. If you use AI to send more, faster and to colder lists, the problem is not the model. It is the volume and the list. You can see the full process in our guide on deliverability and AI.

If your case looks like this

At Data Innovation we have spent more than 20 years building and operating CRM and data systems from Barcelona. Around 1,000 million emails a month pass through our deliverability infrastructure and we have recovered 5 million euros in deliverability for a global consumer goods client. We work with intelligent systems and Human+AI teams, because co-evolution between the two sustains the result in the medium term.

If your team writes with AI, sends more than a year ago and no longer knows whether the email arrives, tell us about your situation and we will review it with you.
